Lesson 1: Identifying and recognising the features of 2D shapes

Introduction

This week in Maths, we will be looking at 2D and 3D shapes. We will be looking at their names, what they look like and the mathematical vocabulary we use to describe them. 

 

The first thing we would like you to do is to have a quick brainstorm on a scrap bit of paper of all the different shapes you can think of. You can draw them, write their names or both! Show you grown up and see if they can add to your list!

 

Having done that, now have a discussion with your grown up about what the word "2D shapes" means? Where have you heard it before?

Now that you are familiar with the names of the different 2D shapes, we'd like you to take 5 minutes to walk around your home and see if you can spot any 2D shapes! Can you list them?
