Lesson 1: Informal Units of Measuring Length

This week in Maths, we will be learning about units of measurement and perimeter. We will be looking at informal and formal ways of measuring lengths, how to use a ruler and how to measure the perimeter of 2D shapes using a ruler.

The first thing we would like you to do is, to have a conversation with your grown up about all measuring length. What is length? How do we measure length? What tools do we need? What objects can we measure the length of in our homes?

What is the difference between formal and informal units of measure?

Below is a PowerPoint about informal methods of measuring, work through the PowerPoint, answering the questions along the way. If you’re unsure ask an adult to explain.

Watch the YouTube clip below demonstrating how to measure length accurately using informal units.

Using Paper Clips to Measure

Now that you are familiar with the different types of informal methods of measuring length, we would like you to walk around your home and find at least 5 objects or more to measure using informal methods. You can be as creative as you like.
