Lesson 1: Introducing Column Subtraction

This week, we will be looking at strategies to solve subtraction number and word problems.

The first thing we would like you to do is, to have a conversation with your grown up about all the different methods of subtracting you can think of.

Which ones have we spoke about in school? Which one do you like using? Why do you like using this method?

Below are three videos of ways to use the column method. One is the expanded column method and one is the simple column method.

Watch all the videos and decide which method you feel confident using. There is also a PowerPoint which you can use to follow the method of column subtraction, this includes both with exchange and without.

Expanded Column Subtraction

Use your chosen method (expanded column method or simple column method) to answer the following chilli challenge questions.

Begin with Mild, if you find this easy move onto Hot and then Flaming Hot.

You need to complete at least 8 questions but if you can do more - that's even better! The more practise you get the better you will be at it.

When you have finished, do not mark them, as you will be self-assessing tomorrow!

Talk to your grown up about anything you found challenging and see if they can support you in figuring where you are getting stuck.
